William Faulkner letters to Maud Butler Faulkner and photograph as an infant [manuscript], 1898, [1954]

Faulkner writes to his mother from Rome [1954] briefly giving his impression of the sights, particularly fountains, and sending her his address in Cairo where he will be working with Howard Hawks on "Land of the Pharaohs." He jokes that Hawks is giving him a share of the picture and "maybe I'll get rich yet." With an envelope from which the stamp has been removed. In a second letter [1954] March 19, on Mena House Hotel Stationery, Cairo, Egypt, Faulkner reports that filming is behind schedule and he may not leave until May. He adds that he doesn't like Egypt and has had stomach trouble. He encloses addresses of friends whom Jack had commanded during the war and asks her to forward them. He wants her to write and tell how everyone is, ending "I love you and wish I was on your front gallery now." With the letters is a photograph of Faulkner taken at the age of 15 months, and labelled "Billy 1 yr" on the front and "William Falkner" on the verso.
